Kirschen Safety Patrol consists of fifth and sixth grade students. Safety patrol members spend the beginning of the year training during their recesses to learn the necessary procedures for correctly crossing pedestrians at the crosswalks. These students come to school early and stay after school to help direct students and other pedestrians across the busy streets. Safety patrol members are scheduled to go out two to three days per week and asked to be willing to substitute for those that are unable to perform their duty that particular day. Safety patrol members are expected to attend regular meetings after school to discuss any problems or concerns they may have. These students are rewarded with ice pops, hot chocolate, and various other rewards during the school year. Safety patrol members are responsible role-models who are greatly appreciated for giving up their valuable time to help keep Kirschen’s students safe.
