Sonoma Elementary School students, staff, and families

We’re proud to announce that Sonoma Elementary School has been named a 2025 California Distinguished School, one of only three schools in Stanislaus County to earn this prestigious recognition from State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond.

This honor places Sonoma among just 336 elementary schools statewide selected for outstanding academic achievement or success in closing persistent achievement gaps. For Sonoma, the recognition builds on a legacy of excellence spanning five decades.

Sonoma recently celebrated a separate milestone—its 50th anniversary in September, when community members, parents, students, and former students reflected on the school's commitment to inclusive education, innovation, and whole-child support.

“For 50 years, Sonoma has been a place where every student is seen, supported, and challenged to grow,” said Principal Jon Webb. “This award is a tribute to the entire Sonoma community, our staff, students, and families, who make this work possible every single day.”

Sonoma was chosen as a Distinguished School based on data from the 2024 California School Dashboard, which evaluates schools on various performance indicators, including English Language Arts (ELA) and math achievement, suspension and absenteeism rates, and student engagement.

Known for its pioneering work in Special Education, Sonoma partners with California Children’s Services to offer medically based physical therapy and is home to the Susan Burris Therapeutic Pool, a one-of-a-kind feature also used by the broader community. The school also offers a Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program for grades 3–6 and the Amigo Program, which fosters meaningful connections between general education students and those with disabilities.

“Sonoma Elementary embodies what makes Modesto City Schools special, from its dedicated educators to innovative programs, and its commitment to every child’s success,” said Superintendent Dr. Sara Noguchi. “We are so proud of the entire Sonoma team for earning this well-deserved recognition.”

This isn’t the school’s first major accolade. Sonoma has previously earned three California Distinguished School Awards, a National Blue Ribbon School Award, and an Excellence in Education Award.

All 2025 California Distinguished Schools will be honored during a statewide celebration at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim on May 30, 2025.

Congratulations to Principal Webb and the entire Sonoma team on this outstanding achievement!
